Rainham Hall, the National Trust house two minutes from Rainham station, stays open through the autumn and early winter on its usual pattern: the house opens Thursday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm, and the garden and Stables Café open Wednesday to Sunday. It then closes completely from Thursday 24 to Thursday 31 December 2026. This winter it also has something new inside: an exhibition of costumes and props from the film Sense and Sensibility, which was shot in the house.

The garden closes half an hour earlier from the start of November. Over Christmas:

  • Saturday 19 December: the last day the house is open this year, and the last day of the film exhibition

The Trust has not yet published its opening days for January to March 2027.

  • RM13 residents and workers get in free with one guest: show something with your address at the welcome desk (booking your visit).
  • Slots can be booked up to two weeks ahead, with new ones released weekly, and there are walk-up tickets on the day. You can book for the same day up to 8am.
  • Your slot is your arrival time. Go to the Wennington Gate entrance.
  • The community garden is free and needs no booking.

What is on this winter

  • Filming Sense and Sensibility at Rainham Hall, 24 September to 19 December, included in the house ticket. Two rooms used as Mrs Jennings’ London house in the film show costumes and props, and a free part of the exhibition is in the Coach House (National Trust).
  • Pumpkin carving and a Halloween ghost trail, 24, 25, 28, 29 and 30 October, 11am to 3pm, £5 a pumpkin (National Trust). More half-term ideas are on our October half term page.
  • Young Rangers, gardening and nature sessions for 6 to 12 year olds on the first Saturday of the month, run until 7 November.
  • Crochet drop-in at the Stables Café, free, no booking.

Getting there

  • Train: Rainham station on the c2c line from Fenchurch Street is 170 metres away, a few minutes’ level walk. Check our Christmas trains page before travelling in late December.
  • Bus: the 103, 165 and 372 stop at Rainham Tesco, the war memorial and the station.
  • Car: there is no parking at the hall. The Trust points to Rainham Tesco, which gives customers three hours free, and the station car park. Sat nav RM13 9YN. Road works on the A1306 and A13 are on our roadworks and travel page, and council car parks are on parking in Romford.
  • Access: the house is not wheelchair accessible; the gardens have step-free access from Wennington Road or The Broadway.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rainham Hall open at Christmas?

No. It closes from Thursday 24 to Thursday 31 December 2026. The house’s last open day before then is Saturday 19 December; the garden and café are open on Wednesday 23 December.

Is Rainham Hall free?

The community garden is free for everyone. The house is free for National Trust members, children under five, and anyone who lives or works in RM13. Otherwise it is £6.50 for an adult.

Do you need to book Rainham Hall?

Booking is recommended for the house, but walk-up tickets are available on the day. The garden needs no booking.
