La Salette Catholic Primary in Rainham is rated Strong standard in six of seven areas. Ofsted's September reports on four Havering schools, grade by grade.
La Salette Catholic Primary School in Rainham has been rated Strong standard in six of the seven areas Ofsted now grades. Nearby Scargill Infant School was rated Strong standard in three, including attendance and behaviour, where inspectors called pupils’ behaviour “exemplary”.
They are two of four Havering state schools whose Ofsted reports were published in September. All four met Ofsted’s safeguarding standards, and none was graded below Expected standard in any area.
The reports are the new-style report cards, which replaced the old one-word grades. Each school is graded in up to seven areas on a five-point scale:
- Exceptional
- Strong standard
- Expected standard
- Needs attention
- Urgent improvement
Strong standard is the second-highest grade. Ofsted explains the scale in its guide to report cards.
The four schools, grade by grade
| School | Strong standard in | Expected standard in | Published |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Salette Catholic Primary, Dunedin Road, Rainham | Achievement; attendance and behaviour; curriculum and teaching; inclusion; leadership and governance; personal development and wellbeing | Early years | 10 Sep |
| Scargill Infant School, Mungo Park Road, Rainham | Attendance and behaviour; early years; inclusion | Achievement; curriculum and teaching; leadership and governance; personal development and wellbeing | 21 Sep |
| Oasis Academy Pinewood, Thistledene Avenue, Collier Row | None | All seven areas | 17 Sep |
| Emerson Park Academy, Wych Elm Road, Hornchurch | None | All six areas (a secondary school, so no early years grade) | 10 Sep |
The inspections took place earlier in the year. Ofsted dates the La Salette and Emerson Park reports 16 June 2026, and the Scargill and Pinewood reports 14 July 2026.
La Salette: results well above the national average
Inspectors wrote that staff “have very high ambitions for pupils” and that pupils “achieve well across all subjects”. They found attainment and progress in reading, writing and maths “consistently above average over time”.
The figures in La Salette’s report back that up:
- 80% of pupils met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined in 2024/25, against 62% nationally.
- 77% did so over the latest three years, against 61% nationally.
- 90% met the expected standard in reading in 2024/25, against 75% nationally.
The report praises the school’s “remarkable pastoral offer”. Its one next step is in Reception: leaders should make sure adults’ interactions with children in the early years are “of a consistently high quality”.
Scargill: attendance “remarkably strong”
Scargill’s report says attendance is “remarkably strong and well above national levels”. It credits drop-in sessions with family support workers, early help for families, and class rewards for the best attendance.
Inspectors found children “very well prepared for Year 1 and beyond”, and pupils achieving above-average results in the Year 1 phonics check. The report also mentions a monthly “king and queen of good manners”.
Its next steps are about staff expertise, matching activities more precisely to pupils, and widening pupils’ personal development.
Pinewood and Emerson Park
Oasis Academy Pinewood in Collier Row was rated Expected standard across the board. Its report says published results over three years are broadly in line with national averages. It notes that phonics results have been variable, and that leaders have strengthened how phonics is taught.
Emerson Park Academy in Hornchurch was also rated Expected standard in every area. Its report says GCSE results have been “close to national averages” over time, and that disadvantaged pupils have “achieved consistently well”. Inspectors found that pupils “behave very well and are happy at school”.
Expected standard is not a poor grade. It means a school is doing what Ofsted expects of every school.
One other Havering school report in September
Ofsted also published its first standard inspection of Edullect Academy Independent School, a fee-paying Islamic primary school on Spilsby Road, Harold Hill. The school had 48 pupils on roll when it was inspected in May. It met the safeguarding standards and was graded Expected standard in five areas. It was graded Needs attention for early years and for leadership and governance. Inspectors found that some of the independent school standards on the quality of education were not met, in relation to the early years.
